How to keep the old format when you paste a text

Dear All,

I have to merge a word file into a middle of 1 another word file. When I
copy and paste the whole first file at a middle of the second file, all the
old formats of the first file are gone.

Could someone tell me how to keep the old formats when I paste text into a
new file?

I'm not the greatest expert, but I do two things:
(1) If you're going to copy an entire file, copy everything EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark.
(2) Use Paste Special >> Unformatted Text.
Some formatting is applied directly to the text, and some formatting is
applied through a Style. I'm not sure what formatting is retained and what
is left behind with these two methods, but it should give a bit cleaner
Paste.

The formatting of a paragraph is stored in the non-printing pilcrow
(paragraph mark). Keep your Show|Hide turned on while you are copying and
pasting and do not select the paragraph mark and you will not copy the
formatting to your document.

You can also choose Paste Special and unformatted text, but then you will
have to apply formatting after you paste it.
