Start DOS in your preferred way, load smartdrv.exe and then execute
winnt.exe in the i386 directory on your XP setup CD.

Technicians who try to maintain their superiority by keeping
their little trade secrets are obnoxious. Find another
technician, one who shines through is ability to assist.

Here is how you can do it:
1. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk
(www.bootdisk.com).
2. Use fdisk.exe and format.exe to create a 15 or 20 GByte
primary partition. Use fdisk.exe to mark it active.
3. Type these commands:
D:
cd \i386
winnt
This will install WinXP in the primary partition you just
created. When Windows is up and running, you can do
these things:
- Convert the primary partition from FAT32 to NTFS.
- Create a data partition.
- Change the drive letters as follows:
C: (for Windows, no change)
D: (for your data)
E: (for your CD drive)

"Boot" doesn't mean "install." To "boot" a computer is to start it running,
something that most of do at least once every day.

XP PRO, the normal way

What was the "normal way"? Exactly what did you try?

but failed,

And how did you fail? What happened when you tried? If you got an error
message, please quote it verbataim.

so the
technician installed it through DOS, he refused to tell me how, could

I see that Tom Porterfield already answered your specific question, but my
comments and questions are to help you understand what to do if you ever get
into the same situation.

And by the way, a technician who refuses to answer a legitimate question
about what he did to your computer and how he did it is a disreputable one.
Next time, take your business elsewhere.
