How to install HD

Can someone please explain how to install HD of an older PC as a slave drive
into new one. Is it easy? Is it pretty much self-explanatory (when you open
your PC?!).

I'm doing it the first time and need all the help I can get.
Thank you.

Yes, it is easy.

1. First check what drive you presently have installed.
2. Visit the manufacturer's web site to find out what jumper settings are
proper. Most newer drive has them clearly indicated on the drive some of the
older did not.

3. Next determine which cable you want to use. There should be two ribbon
cables from the motherboard. Typically, the first is connected to your
primary harddrive and the second to a DVD or cdrom.

4. Lets assume you intend to install it on the same cable as the primary
harddrive. Check locations to ensure the cable is long enough to support the
location you want to install the slave drive. The Master should be at the
end of the cable the slave on the middle connector.

5. Check the jumper for the primary drive (sometimes It need to be changed
when using a slave drive, most drives are not affected). Then set the jumper
on the slave drive as slave.
6. Physically install the drive. (remove the power connector from the back
of the case before starting)
7. Connect the ribbon cable -center connector to the slave drive. The red
line on the ribbon cable goes on the side of the power connector. Connect
the power cable (it can only be installed the proper way. ).

8 . Close the case, connect the power cable and sort the computer. Bios will
typically recognize the drive on newer machines.

Yes. If the hard drive is sharing its interface cable with a CD
(likely) then you will need a new cable (make sure of 80 wires going
into 40 pin plugs) and connect via the second IDE socket on the
motherboard - and a power connector). In that case leave the jumper on
the drive as Master. If the second connector on the first cable is
free, plug in there and set jumper to slave - usually by removing it.

Power up, make sure BIOS detects the drive. It should then show in My
Computer

In XP you may need to "Take Ownership" before having access to the
drive's content. Look that up in Help and Support
