How to insert a file name (doc#) and have it UPDATE at new save

Our company uses a document management system. Because of multiple users, we
like to put the document number at the end of each document (Word,
WordPerfect or what have you) for quick retrieval. In Word, we find we can
only insert the entire file name (which includes the path and not just the
document number) by inserting a field that pulls everything in. So that is
the first issue. How can we just insert the doc. no.?

The second question, and more important, how can we get the doc. no. to
UPDATE when we use the original and resave to another original -- in
WordPerfect the document no. automatically updates/changes, but in Word it
does not seem to do that and another manual insert field has to be done.
Does anyone have any experience inserting document numbers for document
management systems and having them automatically update upon resaving a new
original or new version?

Hi Jill,

Word's filename field can insert just the filename if you want - you don't have to include the path.

If you put the filename field into the document footer, it'll update if you do a print preview. Otherwise, selecting it and pressing
F9 will update it, as will re-opening or printing the file - depending on your setting in Tools|Options.

Cheers
