How to include a link to a remote file, within my email message?

I want to allow recipient of my email to click on alink to a remote file
(instead of attaching the file to the email). How can I do this?

insert the path into your mail.

Andreas - thanks for this. The remote file is located on a shared drive
(example drive X).

I tried something like \\X:\folder\subfolder\filename but within the email,
it didn't create a link that would open the file when you Click (or
Control+Click) on it. What am I doing wrong?
