You should be able to remove folders but not remove the small area. Out of
curiousity, what's annoying about it? I've seen a few users recently coming
from earlier versions complaining about the Favorite Folders feature. I find
it invaluable since I keep some search folders there.

it annoys me because i keep removing the folders and the area
repopulates itself the next time i turn it on, plus the list grows on
its own. i have never been in my registry but if there is a hack i
would be tempted to try it.

You can't remove the "Favorite Folders" section of the Navigation Pane
"Mail" view, but you can certainly switch to a view that doesn't have it,
like the "Folder List" view.

With your Inbox displayed, right click any of your column headers >
Choose "Customize Current View > Fields button > In "Select Available
Fields From...", choose "All Email Fields" > Select "Email Account"
and put it where you want it in the display.
