I've used the language setting tool & I seem to have the spell check working
in proper English for new documents BUT it reverts to US spelling on old
documents, which is pretty usless - can anyone help?

I'm not an authority on the issue, but I can tell you that Language is a
_formatting_ property of the text in a document. Word does not - nor should
it - change the language specs in an existing doc any more than it should
change the bold to non-bold, etc. In the older doc - as long as it needs to
be totally "converted" - use Ctrl+A (to select all), then go to
Tools>Language & apply the appropriate language spec of your choice.

Keep at least 2 things in mind though: Some docs may have certain passages
that you *don't* want to convert, and the Language spec in any given doc may
be controlled by a Style. In which case(s) you may need to approach the
matter of changing the language spec accordingly.
