My university had a program that allowed me to download an ISO image of
Windows XP Pro with SP1. I actually own 3 version of Windows XP now and would
like to sell the version that I got from my school. I checked the rules on
eBay and they claim I need permission to sell my copy since it's a type of
academic version, but my copy was never purchased as an academic version. Do
I need permission to sell this software since it's not technically an
academic version? How do I go about getting permission if I do? (I don't have
this installed on my computer and Microsoft needs a PID number for any email
questions concerning this software).

You dont need permission, you just sell it - whether the licence allows
transfer is another matter

You can't. Academic Volume Licenses remain the property of the school,
even though they've granted you permission to use said license while
(and only while) you're a student at that school.

It may not have purchased by you, but it was purchased as an Academic
Volume License by the school, who still owns it. In simple English, the
license isn't yours to sell.

You would first need to buy the Volume License from the school before
you could claim ownership and therefore the privilege of selling the
license. Oh, and volume licenses must be sold in quantities of no fewer
than 5, and can only be sold by licensed Microsoft resellers.

Either use the license yourself, or give it back to the school so they
can issue it to a more deserving student.
