how to get new mail to appear in inbox without clicking "send/rec.

new mail does not show up in my inbox unless I click "send/receive". I want
all new mail to appear in my inbox upon opening Outlook

In Outlook XP (2002) its like this:
Go to Tools, Options, click on the Mail Setup tab, check the "Send
immediately when connected" box, then click on the "Send/Receive" button,
and check the "Schedule an automatic Send/Receive every " and put a suitable
number in the minutes box.
Other versions will be similar.

You did not post your Outlook version.
It differs with each.
