How to get footnotes in copied text to run consecutively?

I copied some text from a Word Doc into a new Doc, but it kept the old
footnote numbers. How can I create a continuous consecutive series of
footnotes?

Oh dear. This usually happens naturally. If it doesn't, it suggests
something is wrong.

Are there any section breaks in the new doc? It's possible to restart
footnote numbering by section.

Are you sure the notes in the old doc were created using Word's Insert |
Footnote feature? Are you sure they are both footnotes, and not one series
of footnotes and another of endnotes? If you enter a new note in the old
doc, do the numbers there renumber?
