How to get a copy of a KERNEL or core files for booting?

How to get I a copy of a KERNEL or core files for
booting? I had a HD to crash and I was running BOOTXP
program, well, when I went to get the updates for the
service pack 1 it will not let me install because the
kernel is not on the system. Help!!!
