How to fix problem with address bar?

If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it.
Yesterday I installed the XP 2 service pack. (I think that was what it
was called.) Now when I enter certain addresses like espn.com into my
address bar and press enter, nothing happens. If I use the previously
visited sites drop down menu, I can select them there, but not if it is
the main one entered manually. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much. It took just a few minutes to fix with your provided
links. You saved me!!!
 
Iv'e got the same problem. My history button also freezes and I can't bring
it up. What was told to you that worked?
I would appreciate it greatly.
