after i click "turn off", a message pops up
labelled "ending program - sample" as if i have a program
still running. i have to click "end now" twice before my
computer shuts down. how can i fix this without formating
my computer?

thanx

I have the same problem. 'sample' the name of the program that won't end.
there is no indication of what the program actually is. i did a search and
didn't find any executables on my hard drive that contained the word 'sample'

Thanks for the programs, the start up log is definately helpful, but I still
have the same problem after running all three programs. Did it work for you
guys (KL and paulp)? Also, is there anything else it could be?

Dude Guy

I have exactly the same problem "ending program - Sample" dialog appears
twice on shutdown. A complete computer search shows no such program exists.
I tried the repairs discussed in this thread - Kelly's Corner reg entries and
uphclean - and this did not fix the problem.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Is it listed here: Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup or under running processes
via the Task Manager or here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

The only reference to "sample" in the entire repository is to the "sample"
Northwind database (an example database w/Office 2003 (I think)).

The only other odd thing (to me since I do not know any better) is that I am
running 5 copies of svchost. Two have associated startup entries, three are
blank.

svchost.exe c:\windows\System32\svchost -k DcomLaunch
svchost.exe
svchost.exe c:\windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
svchost.exe
svchost.exe

Other than that, there is no reference to "simple" anywhere on the machine,
in the registry, or a running process. I have scanned for viruses with
Norton, Trend, McAfee, f-prot, and AVG. I have cleaned asware/spyware with
AdAware and Spybot S&D. This is becoming an odd little problem to solve.

Thank you for any help/replies.

That said:

Just prior to the shutdown time, the form will issue a
warning message to users. When the shutdown time arrives, the form will save
any
open objects or forms and then close the database. Because this process logs
everyone off during the night, it is very useful for administering the
database in the
early morning.

Hmmmmm...... I'm still quite skeptical about this being the cause. The
"closing Sample" dialog appears all the time, whether I use Office 2003 or
not. And, again, the active process list, the active program list, and the
"Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker" do not show any MS access or other
database processes running.

If there are any other ideas to try, please let me know.

Thank you,
Steve
