How to check the XP version?
XP Pro OEM, XP Pro Retail or Pro Enterprise?

Is there any specific file where this info can be found, to search from HDD
when installation doesn't boot anymore?

Thanks.

click on my comp left blue panel system info there you will see what service
pack you are

Its likely in the registry, where? perhaps someone will tell.
If so you would have to connect the drive as slave in another sys to check

Right-click My Computer > Properties. On the General Tab, read the
20-digit Product ID located just below the "Registered to:" information.
If the Product ID is entirely numerical, you have a retail license.
If the Product ID contains the letters "OEM," you have an OEM license.
There is no such thing has "Pro Enterprise," so we already know you
can't have it.

Then simply look at the packaging of the CD from which it was
originally installed. Also, if it was a factory-installed license, than
there will be a Certificate of Authenticity label bearing the Product
Key affixed to the case of the PC.

Thanks for all replies - but the question is much more complicated as it
seems.

Windows update has corrupted something and now starting computer ends with
blue screen.
That is, I can access HDD through other PC only.

The PC has passed WGA but still doesn't have any more percise sticker.
I have it's Windows key - but I don't know to which installation it belongs.

There are 20-30 versions of Windows installations, which I'm able to name -
Retail Pro, Retail Home, all OEM's, Enterprise, OEM Enterpise, Upgrades to
all previous etc. etc And each having their own keys.
