How to exit Outlook

R

Ronny Westman

When closing Microsoft Outlook 2003 the program doesn´t close. The program
still runs in the background. Therefore I need to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to
force the program to close.

I use McAfee for AntiVirus, Firewall and anti-spam.

How do I close the program?

Best Regards
Ronny

McAfee is the culprit. You should not have it checking your email as it
is redundant and can cause problems like what you're experiencing.

Add-ons that you have installed for Outlook can keep it alive for
awhile. For example, the Personal Folders Backup (PFB) add-on is
configured to periodically save a copy of your .pst file. On exit, it
copies the .pst file to the save folder. Obviously it takes some time
before the copy operation completes. During this time, Outlook has to
remain running for the add-on to perform its tasks.

When Outlook loads, it also has to load all the enabled add-ons. If an
add-on crashes or hangs on load then Outlook also crashes or hangs.
When Outloook exits, it must first unload all the loaded add-ons. If an
add-on crashes or hangs on unload then Outlook also crashes or hangs on
exit. If the add-on performs some task on Outlook's exit then Outlook
has to remain loaded waiting for that add-on to complete its actions and
for that add-on to unload.

How long did you wait after exiting Outlook before checking the
Processes tab in Task Manager to see when the outlook.exe process
disappears? Depending on what add-ons you installed to Outlook, it can
a minute or three before outlook.exe unloads.

I find that Outlook responds differently depending on how you exit it. If
you click the X in the upper right of the window, Outlook will look like it
is shut down, but it is still running in the background (and I still see the
Outlook icon in the taskbar on the lower right), and when an emails arrive
that trigger a notification, the notifcation boxes will appear. However, if
I exit Outlook by clicking File->Exit, Outlook truly shuts down. You can
verify this by using Task Manager. This is strange behavior--one would think
it would shut down the same way whether you X out of it or hit File-Exit.

You are mistaken. Both actions work the same. Your problem is elsewhere.
Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle. (activesync,
iTunes, etc.)
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.
7. Skype
8. Infuzer
9. Google calendar synch.
