All the email I send now has this issue - all punctuation marks are replaced
by a symbol. I'm using Outlook 2002.

Yes, the * is above the 8.

I opened Word, checked Formatting marks - everything is already deselected
so I didn't make a change.

Anything else to try? What if I DON'T have Word as email editor - what do I
lose? Thanks so much for your help and for continuing with me on this!

Could be keyboard layout. Is the * above your 8?

Otherwise open Word and deselect Tools-> Options...-> tab View-> deselect
everything in the section Formatting marks

Thank you for your help - yes, Word is the email editor. I just tried
CTRL+SHIFT+8 and nothing happens. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

With Word as the e-mail editor I presume? CTRL+SHIFT+8 toggles the
formatting marks.

Here's what I did to fix my problem with the "little squares".

1. Open Word and go to Tools>AutoCorrect Options
2. Go to "AutoFormat" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"
3. Go to "AutoFormat As You Type" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with
"smart quotes"
