How to download Windows' Notepad

H

hendis

Hi. TIA to anyone who can help.

My Norton AV 2003 reported a Trojan Horse in "notepad.exe". It was
unrepairable, so I had to quarantine and delete it. Now, obviously, I
can't open ".txt" files. I need another copy of Windows' Notepad
(preferably uninfected) to replace the one I trashed.

If anyone can help, my email is "(e-mail address removed)". (Be sure to
remove the underscore and the "NOSPAM" before sending.

Thanks again.

1. Right-click on your Desktop and select NEW > SHORTCUT
2. Type in: NOTEPAD.EXE , and click Next.
3. Type in a name for the shortcut, such as "NotePad"
4. Click "Finish".
5. A shortcut to your NotePad program will appear on your desktop.

Or try Start > Run and type: %windir%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE
and hit enter.

EditPad Lite is an excellent Notepad replacement.
It's a lightweight text editor, but certainly not as bare
as the standard Notepad that comes with Windows.

You can extract a copy from your XP CD if you have a retail or OEM
copy. If you have a "recovery" type CD, it may not be a good idea
since some recovery CDs will re-install the operating system causing
you to lose everything.

Or, you download a free notepad replacement application. I use
EditPad Lite which is free. It's more powerful than notepad and is
configurable. Go here to download:

If you have a regular XP CD, go to All Programs - Accessories - Command
prompt, and if say D: is the CD drive letter, give

Expand D:\i386\notepad.ex_ C:\windows\Notepad.exe

Exit

If you don't have a proper CD, there may be an i386 folder on the
machine containing notepad.ex_ - if so, use the path to that folder in
the command instead
