How to download missing codecs?

My Windows movie maker has been working fine for a long time, but as from
today it is no longer allowing me to capture videos from my sonicam. I get a
message saying the file cannot be imported because the codec required to play
the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to
download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and
then try to import the file again.
What's gone wrong and where can I download these codecs?

What sort of cam is it? minidv, hard drive, dvd?
Have you made any changes at all to the pc since it last worked? If so, have
you tried using system restore back to when it did work?
