how to do a "check for updates" over the internet

Is there an example somewhere that shows how from an Excel addin to do
a "check for updates" by using the internet to contact my web site?

Not from an Excel add in but in Start>Help & Support>Under Pick a Task there
is a link for Windows Updates.

What I want to do is from my own excel addin query my own web site for
the current version, so as to compare it to the one the user is
running.

I don't see how Windows Update has any relation to this sort of task.
