How to dismount drive before reboot?

Sometimes my machine (XP Pro) develops a problem that causes a normal
reboot to not complete, forcing me to hit the reset button to cycle the
machine. I'm using a Silicon Image 3114 RAID card with drives in Raid
1 mode, and when the machine is rebooted in this fashion this
unfortunately causes the drives to get out of sync. The drives rebuild
OK, but I'd like to avoid this problem in the first place. I know that
my best option is likely to buy a "real" RAID card instead of this
cheap one, but I was hoping that there would be a way to remove the
drives from service before powering the machine down. Something like
unmounting the volumes, powering them down gracefully, whatever it
takes to prevent from them from being affected during a hard reset. If
anyone out there has any hints or needs more info, please let me know.
