Control how the browser opens PowerPoint files

Your best bet might be to include instrux to rightclick and choose Save Target
As in order to download the link.

You could also zip the PPT up and offer the zip for download. Of course then
you'd have to explain how to unzip it.

Never easy, is it?

Completion of question---->Well thanks for the answer it is the best one
since i did not formulated the question proper.
The thing is that I need to know how to open the powerpoint file
automatically with Power point not internet explorer, when a link to a
powerpoint file is clicked?
If I try to print from internet explorer i don't get all the functinality i
need with the print button. I know thereare alternaties like "Ctrl+p" but
students don't care about that so they waste paper, so I need to have some
enforcements.

See the link I posted, then. There's a link to an MS page that describes how to do
that. You have to make the change on the client PC though; it's a user preference
thing, not something you can impose from the server.

Thank you for that link, but I did find it myself eariler. In reading the
documentation contianed, though, you'll notice that this is just for up to
PowerPoint 2002. This does not solve the problem for 2003.

Whenever I have someone click on a .ppt file, it opens in IE. I have tried
both the registry edit and the File Type solution but neither seem to apply
to the way that 2003 handles documents.

Unfortunately not, you're right. I've updated the FAQ info to reflect that. Thanks for
the gentle prod in the ribs.

The page here explains some of the reasons for the change
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=838028

Takes a lot of patience to plow through it and it offers no solution to the problem, so
I won't be offended if you want to skim or skip it. <g>

About the best I've been able to do is get it to offer a file download dialog; if the
user chooses Open rather than Save, it'll open in the browser.

But at least it does get you to the file download option, so have another look here
(updated):

Control how the browser opens PowerPoint files

Basically, you use My Computer, Tools, Options, File Types tab and in the Edit FIle Type
dialog box, put a check next to "Confirm open after download"

Tim,

If you're still there, I think we have a bingo, thanks to a friend at MS.

I've updated this again:

Control how the browser opens PowerPoint files
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00189.htm

By using tools, Options in Win Explorer and setting it NOT to open PPT files in
the same window and NOT to confirm downloads and then making the registry
change mentioned in the link above (set the value to "a") I'm now getting PPT
files opening directly into PPT in a new window, edit mode when clicking a link
to a PPT file in MSIE.

The file will open Read-Only, or at least it does here when opening a link to a
file on a web server.
