How to disable automatic PST compacting in OL2007?

I've noticed that Outlook (all versions, but 2007 in this case) does
compacting of the PST file in the background as needed. Unfortunately,
this can sometimes make a big impact on system performance. I would
prefer to configure Outlook to =not= do this, instead let me do it on
demand. Is there any way to disable the background compacting?

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK; you can't. Note that it will only do this in the background when
there is no CPU or disk activity going on so you're not affected by it.

Thanks. That's true, it waits until there is a lull in activity, but
it won't STOP the compacting process -- or at least it doesn't seem to
-- once activity resumes. If it cranks up on the compacting process
when I go away for a little while, it won't suspend the compacting
process when I come back and try to resume work. Getting a little
frustrating.

There must be a lot of white space in your pst-file then. Compact it
manually and repeat that 3 times. Unless you delete a lot of stuff the next
compacting sequences will be done in less than a minute.
