This belongs to the system restore component.
Using disk cleanup, one of the options is to delete all
restore's except the most current; that may well get rid
of the virus.

Greetings --

To clear viruses from the "System Volume Information," simply turn
off the System Restore feature (Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools > System Restore, System Restore Settings), reboot, and
then re-enable System Restore, if you like. This will delete all of
your Restore Points, including the corrupted one(s), and allow you
start with a clean slate.

Those are restore points. The virus can do no harm unless you were to
restore to a point containing it. Wait a day for System Restore to make
a new clean point, then use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
and in its More Options, the button to delete all but this last (clean)
point. The virus will go with the deleted point
