Hi there.

We're running Outlook 2002 in a WinXP Pro environment (no
Exchange server). I need to delete an autocomplete entry;
however, there is only one entry, so I can't use
the "Select from the two (or more) and press delete on the
inappropriate entry" method. That is, as the user types
up the name, she is not given a list of choices; only one
name is near the email address, so it automatically fills
in.

Is there any way to get rid of such a single autocomplete
entry?

Thanks.

When you type one letter it still doesn't fill the box but "hangs" under the
To field. Pressing DELETE will work then as well

Tips of the month:
-Backup and Restore
-Create an Office XP CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 3

The only workaround I've found is to create a new entry or resolve to an
existing entry in your Contacts folder, so there will end up being two in
the suggestion list, then you can delete the bad one. The name or the
beginning of the e-mail address would obviously have to be the same as the
one in the bad entry.

For example, if the corrected address is in the Contacts folder, you can
start typing it in the To field, then use CTRL+K to try to resolve the
address against your Contacts. Find the correct entry, then let it fill
into the To field. Now delete the address you just put into To, and start
typing it again. Now both the good and bad addresses should be suggested --
highlight the bad one and press Delete.

You may have to play with this to get it to work. When I had the same
problem you did, I played around with it and got it to work with the method
above, but it's been a while, and it's a little hard to explain, so I hope I
didn't confuse you. Post back with the results.

Thanks to all for your responses.

In order:

Andreas: I can't read German, but tried
FreeTranslation.com, but still couldn't get a working
version of your instructions.

Roady: I don't get a box below the entry; it just
autofills right on the line. I've seen it happen
sometimes, even with one name, but I don't know how to
cause that behavior when, as in this case, the address
simply "pops up" on the to: line.

Russ: I'm afraid that the Microsoft work around won't
really work for me. Because my user has continually
mistyped this email address (omitting a letter), it was
entered into the autocomplete list. There is no other
address similar to it, and I'm afraid to create a dummy
entry because I suspect she will simply use that entry and
send to it instead of using the correct address. However,
if nothing else works, maybe I'll try it anyway, and leave
an obviously bogus entry in there and hope.

Jocelyn: I tried control-K to resolve to the contacts. To
do this, though, I could only type two letters. When I
tried to retype the bad address as suggested, I didn't get
two choices, maybe because the difference in the right and
wrong address is in the second letter: eo vs. ec. When I
type three letters, the address autofills, and using
control-K only "finalizes" the autofill suggestion.

Any other ideas or suggestions?
