How to delete or clean recyler?

R

Roman King

There are two HD (C and D) drives in my computer.
During chkdsk today, about 500 MB of corrupted files were dumped into
D:\RECYCLER.
Those corrupted files names are like Dd1234,cab like that.
I tried to delete the Recycler folder or its contents. So far, I am not
successful.
Please help me with cleaning the recycler.
OS is WinXP Pro SP2. Thanks. Roman

At a Command Prompt issue:

rd /s /q d:\recycler

Windows will create a new recycler for the drive when the computer is
rebooted.

The Recycler folder is a hidden folder where the files you delete are stored, until
you empty the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin just redirects to the Recycler folder.

Right-click the Recycle Bin on the Desktop, click Empty Recycle Bin, and OK the
confirmation message.

See if that gets rid of the files.

"RECYCLER" is the Recycle Bin.

On your desktop, right-click on the Recycle Bin and select "Empty
Recycle Bin".

It's a Hidden folder....do you have your Explorer View settings to Show All Files?

I don't know if the folder disappears if you set the Bin to be bypassed, but I would
think not. To test, try setting the Bin to be used instead of bypassed, reboot and
see if the Recycler folder appears.

Yes -- but it wouldn't matter because I did a Search with the
appropriate checkbox checked.

?? What do you mean by "used instead of bypassed"? Is that different
from what I said:

Oops, sorry Stan, I misread that sentence in your earlier post. Try toggling that
setting from one to the other, clicking Apply after each change.

Also, and this should be looked at first, go to Control Panel> Folder Options> View
tab, uncheck "Hide Protected Operating Systems Files" and click OK.

If no joy, go here:

Line 64, Right Hand Side.
Repair/Restore Recycle Bin

See if that helps.

The Recycle Bin isn't broken, it's just interesting that despite the
documentation I have no RECYCLER directory.

Are you on FAT32?

Yeah, I know the Bin isn't broken, I was suggesting the 'repair' to see if it had
any effect on your Recycler folder issue. Have you used the Recycle Bin? I ask
because on some FAT32 partitions I have, the Recycled folder was not created until I
had actually used the Bin to hold a file prior to emptying the Bin. The same issue
may occur with NTFS and Recycler. I am assuming that your file system *is* NTFS.

Have you tried John John's suggestion in this thread, to create a Recycler folder?

I don't have an issue. I don't know how to make it any more clear
than that: my system is working fine, but the documentation doesn't
match.

Well, to me it is an issue of having an NTFS partition with XP and not having a
Recycler folder....seeing as the docs state it should be there, and every NTFS
partition I look at in XP has one. Your system can work fine and still have an
issue, i.e., something is missing. :)

Is that a yes? ;-)

It's a "dude, I answered your question once before, and here is the
answer again".

Unfortunately, you've got your signature delimiter set up wrong, and
you included that relevant quote after your signature, so it's lost
in this follow-up. Please read what I wrote.

I didn't ask it before, however you did state in your first post that it was an NTFS
partition...I am aware of that. My comment: "I am assuming that your file system
*is* NTFS" (emphasis on *is*) was just indirectly asking for confirmation, since
many times before I have seen folks swear up and down that something *is*, only to
pop back later with "uh, sorry, it isn't after all."

You haven't mentioned if you tried John John's suggestion made to the OP, regarding
creating a Recycler folder, and seeing if it then shows the items you put into your
Bin. Of course, if you don't want to play with it, that's up to you. Since you
posted the info in the thread, I thought you were interested in experimenting with
the apparent anomaly on your system. :)

Signature delimiter is set up correctly and works as it is supposed to. The problem
is that I was either top-posting, or replying inline and adding my sig before the
end of the entire quoted text, causing what was below it to be cut. Such is life in
the Free World. ;-)
