How can I delete the history of previous commands in the drop-down
menu for Start > Run?

I think there is an alternative to editing the Registry and deleting
the keys in the RunMRU folder. But I forget what that is.

I tried highlighting the item in the drop-down menu and pressing
Delete, to no avail.

Right click > Properties > Start Menu > Customize > Advanced > Clear List

The text next to the button says it will clear most recently opened
documents, but it also clears entries in the run box.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

Do not delete "Default", all else is ok and the list will rebuild as you use
Start > Run.

Download and run the Cleaner feature of Crap Cleaner. It's free, quite
good, and available at http://www.ccleaner.com/
