How do you copy and paste file and folder names? Every time I try it, the
machine thinks I want to copy the file or the folder, not just the name.

Just click twice slowly on the file or folder name area, then you can edit
the name or hover over the file name again, right click and select copy. Or
right click over the file - select rename - hover over the file again, right
click and select copy (ctrl c also works)

Is that what you want?

Hi Walt

Right-click on file, select Rename. While the file name is highlighted you
can use copy/paste on it.

Download a copy of a freeware program called Copy2Clip.

You use it to select as many file names or folders as you
want and then you can Copy2Clip and paste it to Notepad
for example.

It will paste all the file and folder names and you can
configure it to show the file name...or filename and
path, or sort alphabetically etc.

This program adds itself to the right click menu.
Another good right click menu program is CopyURL for
internet shortcuts.

Both are freeware, no cost to you, no nag screens, no
icons to click and run.

From the command prompt (Start > Run > Cmd.exe), simply change to
the desired directory and type "dir > filelist.txt" or "dir > lpt1,"
just as you used to do in DOS. Any of the switches for the DIR
command (type "dir /?") will work with this command, if you wish to
modify the output. You can then subsequently edit the resulting text
file using NotePad, WordPad, Word, etc.

Copy to where? A text file?

Several methods to accomplish this.......

To add a "Print Directory" feature to Explorer, go to
this KB Article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q272623&

Or you can download Printfolder 1.2 from.....

http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/

I use PF 1.2 and find it to be more than adequate with custom features.

OR Go to DOS(Command) prompt and directory.
Type DIR >MYFILES.TXT

All the above create a *.TXT file which can be opened in any text editor.

Just to add another option to those posted:

Dowload tweakUI which contains a 'send to' extension. Wnen you install this,
two of the other send to options available are 'send to clipboard as name',
and 'send to clipboard as contents'.

For example here is one copied from a file (a shortcut) on my desktop.
C:\Documents and Settings\General User\Desktop\Scanned Files.lnk

As you can see it also gives you the whole file name, not just the last bit.
Another benefit is that you dont accidentally delete the filename when you
are doing the highlight/paste thing.

Set out to rename the object (r-click Rename), then as it is
highlighted, take Ctl-C to copy the highlighted name, and ESC to cancel
the rename
