How to connect to an MS SQL database behind a router?

Hello All,

New here and to SQL, thanks in advance for assistance. I have recently
upsized an MS Access db to MS SQL (MSDE2000 on XP) and created an MS Access
project as the front-end. MSDE is on a machine that is behind a D-link
router. I can connect to the MSSQL db just fine from another machine that is
attached to the same router.

I am trying to connect from another machine located elswhere in the
building, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have opened port 1433 on the
router and in the MS Firewall. I have also tried using the address of the
router and the IP address of the machine where the MSSQL db resides in the
Network Address property of the connection window for my MS Access project.
Neither work.

What am I doing wrong and can anyone walk me through setting this up? ANY
HELP is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Shawn

The port 1433 must be forwarded (or rerouted) to the correct machine when
the router is accessed from the outside and the IP address of the router
must be used, not the IP address of any of the local machines. Don't forget
that only the external address of the router is visible from the exterior
and that your local addresses are unknown and hidden to the outer network.
