While I am on to such knowledgeable friends here, may I ask, (without
starting on yet another thread), what is the best Newsgroup for CD
burning advice please?
Since I had to re-format my hard drives due to a virus infestation, I
have not been able to get my burning software to operate as it used to
do.

Derrick,
I find this forum as good as any, but there many out there .. so try:
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/index.php

I agree Peter, but I had been subscribed to a photographic NG which had
been very good with CD burner problems and I was not sure if they were
dealt with here.
I have pasted the following query elsewhere on this forum to no result
so far, (though not long posted), and I would respectfully ask your
indulgence if I could repeat it below. I especially ask to do this as I
am badly stuck, just when I needed to burn copies of CD's badly I get
problems, were it ever different.

My query elsewhere was, I quote :-

"Having had no problems burning audio CD's up to recently when I had to
re-format my hard disks due to viruses, I have just lost Four Blank
disks trying to copy a music CD. Admittedly its a copy of a copy which I
have always been able to do and I used Pinnacle's Instant CD to do it. I
never had a problem, it simply said copy CD to CD and hey presto, a few
minutes later a perfect copy.
Now it offers me to copy it to my hard disk instead of straight to my
blank. I also have Nero and Nero Express which my PC tech put back on my
system. Tried that, it started to copy and then failed near the end of
the process.
Due I use the default Media Player version 10, my Instant CD or Nero or
should I go down to the nearest River and jump in, because at a time
when I urgently need to make some copies for a friend it has all gone
wrong on me.
One possible cause is that I have had my old CD burner changed to a DVD
burner to keep up with technology.
I would greatly appreciate urgent advice on this and please, do say what
you think is the only programme for burning I should have on my PC,
needless to say my OS is XP Home".
Unquote.

With apologies for the longwinded query above, I would greatly like some
advice.

Some DVD Burners do have a problem buring CDs. I have a 2 TDK 440N's in two
machines which won't burn a CD to save its life. It gets right to the very
end and hangs. However one of those two used to burn CDs just fine when I
first got it while the second one never did. I also have another TDK 440N
in a different 3rd machine that still burns CD's just fine.

Hi Philip.

Thank you for the above corroboration of my experiences, I now seriously
regret getting a DVD Burner, I was tempted simply by the fact that I
could store an enormous amount of office date and pictures on one disk,
I can, but it now looks at if I cannot burn ordinary "bread and butter"
basic audio CD's, what next!!

If you are having problems with your DVD-RW, I would check the
Vendors website for any firmware updates. Usually, these correct
issues and add support for newer speeds and media.
My Plextor and Sony units get new flash at least every 3-4 months.
Also CD/DVD lasers can be get dirty - Get a 3-M Micro Fiber
cleaner disk (~$10.) and use periodically to clean the laser lens.

I think you might make it worse than it seems. I have only had this happen
on two,...ever. All others I have dealt with worked fine for all disks. A
firmware update mentioned by R. McCarthy could be a good solution.
