hi all,

using window xp pro, sp2,

would someone be able to advice me on how to clear the cache that hold my
past files/folders search terms (you know the one that is being displayed and
auto-completed soon you start typing some letters) from Start -> Search ->
For Files or Folders... (the one with the cute dog animation)? preferably
without having to install 3rd party software if possible even if it means
dwelving to registry. appreciate it.

regards,
jess

thank you Wesley, that worked!

can i ask a further question along similar lines:

using window xp pro, sp2, office 2003 sp1

how can i clear the cache that hold my previous saved as file names from the
saved as box? for e.g. i am in excel -> file -> save as -> save as dialog box
would appear with file name box at the bottom with a down arrow on the right
handside of the file name box. clicking on this showed the previously saved
filenames. it is these cached information that i want to clear and ideally
make xp/office not to cache this information. is there a way to achieve this?
preferably without having to install 3rd party software if possible even if
it means dwelving to registry. appreciate help/advice on this matter.

regards,
jess

I know what you mean, Jess, I hate that. I have Append Completion,
AutoComplete In File Dialog & AutoSuggest, all of that crap turned off. And
the Hide the dropdown list of recent files, below.

SYMPTOMS
You may experience the following behavior:
* A list of the files that you most recently used appears in the File name
box in the Open dialog box, the Save As dialog box, or other typical Windows
Explorer-style dialog boxes.

Thank you again Wesley. The solution works. Googling 'MRU' is quite an
eye-opener as to what Microsoft keep tracked of!

Jess

Hi Jess,

I use MRU-Blaster...
[[The MRU-Blaster database has approx. 30,345 items in it, however it is
HIGHLY unlikely that you will have all of those items present on your
system. ]]
