Hi,

I have a laptop where a user (with administrator's rights) is
registered in MYCOMPANY domain. Since the laptop is being discontinued
by the company and will be only used at home as stand-alone, I would
like to have such user moved to the LAPTOPNAME domain.

Is it possible?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Stefano

It's possible but may not be straightforward.

Have a look in "Documents and Settings" and see which folder your profile
is in. If it's named the same as your user-account then the process should be
fairly straightforward. If it's named 'domain.username' then not so simple.

To preserve a same-named profile when leaving a domain, log on as
Administrator (or any Admin-capable user OTHER than your normal one) and
rename the profile-folder temporarily.

Now create a user-account on the local machine. This acount must have
exactly the same name as the original profile-folder.

Now log-on once as this user, and off again. Log back-on as Admin. This step
is important, don't miss it.

Now rename the profile-folder back to its original name. Log-on as the local
user you created.. and you should have your normal settings and files.

Finally you might want to take filesystem-ownership of the profile contents.

The renaming is necessary, BTW, because otherwise Windows will see that the
profile already exists and 'sidestep' it, creating a folder with a modified
name instead.

... forgot to add that you need to delete the (empty) profile created for the
new user, before you restore the renamed one. Should be fairly obvious,
anyway!

the name is the username, "stefano", no domain is present :-)

(snip)

could you please better elaborate this topic?

Use the Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer the current
user's files and settings to the computer after it's been disjoined from the
domain and your new local user created.
