The best way is to prevent that from happening. In Word 2003 or
earlier, go to Tools > AutoCorrect Options; in Word 2007 go to Office
button > Word Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options. In either
version, click the AutoFormat As You Type tab of the dialog and
uncheck "Ordinals (1st) with superscript".
The fix any that already exist, select the small characters and press
Ctrl+Shift+= which is the shortcut for toggling the superscript font
format on and off. (Or you can open the Font dialog and uncheck
"Superscript".)
