How to change the default setting for object layout?

Is there a way of changing the default setting for object layout so it (say)
lies inline with the text rather than (as on my PC) lying over the text?

In Word 2002 and 2003, you can modify the default text wrapping for
inserted/pasted objects (Tools | Options | Edit). Note that this will affect
only newly inserted graphics, not existing ones (and it also doesn't affect
Paste Special).

I'm having a few "default" questions now.

How about changing the default footnote text style? Is there a way of doing
this?

Modify the Footnote Text style. Note that when your insertion point is in a
footnote, if you right-click, one of the shortcut menu choices is Style...,
which will take you directly to the Style dialog with Footnote Text
selected. Click Modify... and make whatever changes you like.
