How to change HK_CURRENT_USER registry settings

N

Nicolas Macarez

Hi all !
My machine is a Windows 2000 Professional desktop - no domain controller, no
Active Directory, everything is local.

I wish to enable a user without the administrative rights to be able to
modify any key and entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER in order to execute a logon
script at the opening of his session.

For example, by default, the user doesn't have the right to create and/or
modify any entry under :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

Any help greatly appreciated !

Nicolas

Hi Patrick,
I am very sorry but I tried to work out this issue with regedt32 before my
post.
When I am logged on as an administrator, I am able to change the access
rights on all the keys, sub-keys and entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and of
course under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r.
No problem.

But when I am back with my normal user (no admin rights), I am still unable
to change the rights (read only) of this very key I need to modify by script
:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
even using the regedt32 registry editor.
If you have 2 sec., please make the test.
Yours truly,
Nicolas

ADD the user to the local administrators group. Logon as the user, run
regedt32.exe make the necessary changes logoff, remove the user from the
admin group.
