How to break link if "Break Link" is grayed out?

An Excel workbook [Excel 2002 (10.2614.2625); XP Pro] has magically picked up
a link to an existing workbook which I cannot get rid of. When opening said
file I get the message "This workbook contains one or more links that cannot
be updated." I have tried the solution below and when I try to Edit Links
the Open Source and Check Status are the only operative buttons. When I try
to Insert Name only Paste is available.

When I Check Status the error message is: "Error: Undefined or
non-rectangular." I searched the Microsoft database and found:

Error: Some names cannot be resolved until the source
Undefined or workbook is opened. Click Open Source, switch
non-rectangular name back to the destination workbook, and then click
Check Status. If this does not resolve the issue,
make sure the name is not misspelled or missing.
Switch to the source workbook, point to Name on the
Insert menu, click Define, and then look for the
name.
(Define is grayed out. It only allows Paste. It won't allow any thing but
Check Status and Open Source. Other buttons are grayed out.)

I have used search workbook formulas in an attempt to find the linked file
name but it cannot find it.

Thank you very much for your response.
1. The workbook is not protected but each worksheet is protected.
2. I tried to deal with the add-in but I get the message that my security
level is too high to allow macros. I have tried to reduce the security level
but apparently have not done it correctly because I continue to get the same
message. Any ideas? I tried to eliminate the need for signed macros because
ever time I open the workbook I have to answer the question "Disable Enable
Macros." I am in a Virtual Private Network and I am the administrator
although I don't really know what I'm doing (I have a guru in my other
location who set up the network but he didn't encourage me to lower the
security level. What do I do now coach?

after removing the link I would set the security level again to medium

Thank you, thank you!!! You pinpointed both problems. I couldn't find the
link by name because (I suppose) the worksheet was protected. The findlink
add-in is fantastic. I couldn't run it with a Medium security level but, by
changing to Low it ran beautifully. I have virus scanning software running
so I guess I'm OK with the Low level - it now allows my workbook to open
without having to select Enable Macros.

at least for one run of this addin you have to set the security level
to 'Medium' and run this macro
