How to block multiple Tracking Cookie popups in AVG

G

groupie

Hi,
Some webpages seem to have multiple cookies and AVG popups a dialog
("Ignore, Heal, Move to vault") for each and every one. This keeps
happening even if one moves the cookies to the vault, leaves the page
and returns to it. I also have AD-AWARE but this doesn't seem to block
them (unless AVG 'gets there' first, I guess!).

Is it possible to block these cookies just the once (similar to
setting a program's access status with a firewall) rather than keep on
manually blocking these cookies each time? It's driving me crazy!

Thanks.

Google for "hosts file."

It is with a modern browser.

With Firefox, for example, you set it to ask for all cookies, then (for
these ad cookies) click the dialog's Deny button with a check in the "Do
not ask me again" box.

Click the Allow button for cookies you need, such as your web mail, bank
sites, etc.

Hi Shaggy......

I followed what you said above and then decided to just leave well
enough alone. For cookies I wanted I just accepted them using your
scheme. So I changed back to what I had before. But for some reason
GMail says I have cookies turned off in Firefox. I don't. I changed it
back to "allow cookies until they expire" and nothing I do will allow
GMail to open. Any suggestions? I switched back to your method and
when the gray box came up, I *allowed* GMail to *change a cookie*.
Didn't work.

Other sites such as Yahoo and my banking ones I am having absolutely no
problem with. I can use IE7 for GMail, but would prefer not to have to.

Cheers.....Heather

I would suggest you click the [ Exceptions ] button, click on the top of
the Status column (to sort by Allow/Block) and click the first Block,
hold down Shift key, scroll and click the last Block, and click the
Remove Site button at the bottom.

There is bound to be one gmail-related cookie URL in your blocked list.
Doing the above will remove all "Block" status, but this isn't a
problem; just block ad- and other unwanted cookies again later.

IE is good for wrapping fish...

I use my email client for Gmail, and rarely visit their web site.

OK, I will do that. But a blonde question here, grin. Does FF
automatically put a lot of the ad cookie sites in there without me
knowing it?? I have used it for so long that I forget.

And I assume you mean for me to use your *allow/deny* method.

LOL....I forward all of my GMail to OE (horrors!!, but I have made it
quite safe) but from time to time I go into the GMail website and delete
the duplicates. I use GMail for genealogy lists that are spammer
delights, so the spam does build up in there. I do wish that Rootsweb
would smarten up and not make addresses available to the great
unwashed!!

Automatically? No, they get to be there when you either allow or deny
them. Status: "Allow/Block"
I have used it for so long that I forget.

Birthdays: cause of memory loss.
And I assume you mean for me to use your *allow/deny* method.

Certainement, Madame.

How do you forward it to OE? Don't you just download your Gmail like
any other POP3 email?

Hmm.....that looks quite different from the setup I used way back when I
configured OE to receive my GMail stuff.

The reason I have it go thru GMail is due to the amount of spam that
GMail grabs. Because I only use it for 3 or 4 things, I keep that spam
away from my main address. Does that make any sense?? (VBG)

Anyway, I will get the blocking on FF sorted out and answer when I have
done so. Busy day......so on and off here. Now into designing
jewellery, and that takes up a lot of thought. And fiddley messing
about with teeny bits and pieces. But damn, I am good......LOL!!

Way back, Gmail POP3 may not have been available yet.

Using POP3 access only downloads what is in the Inbox, not the Spam box.
Are you implying you get a lot of spam in the Gmail Inbox? I never get
any there, whilst accumulating maybe 300 per month in the Spam box.
Because I only use it for 3 or 4 things, I keep that spam away from my

Doesn't OE separate different email addresses? No? Oh my... time for a
modern email client! :)
Does that make any sense?? (VBG)

Not much...

Hi Shaggy......for your benefit, I will intersperse.....but I only do
that for *special people*.....lol.

Don't think it was. But I did have problems with forwarding mail this
year and the link you gave me led to a diagnostic proggie which I ran
and it is A-OK now. So whatever I did before worked. Thanks for that
one.

Sigh.....yes, that is what I meant. I knew I messed it up (the post).
Having a bad day.

Yes, it does separate different email addresses and no, I do not want to
use a *modern email client*. I am quite happy with (and used to) OE.

Years ago, I made the mistake of trying out Free Agent.....hated it!! I
had thought about Thunderbird, but if OE ain't broke, etc. I have it
safe-hexed and have had no problems in what.....10 years??

Off for dinner at the ever swanky Wendy's.....see you later. (G)

Did that and I forgot to tell you that it cured the GMail loading
problem. But....see below.

I have NEVER used that cookie blocking thing that you advised until this
week, so how come I had a ton of ad cookies blocked in that *Exceptions*
spot???

This is no longer a *blonde question* because I realized that I had done
nothing to stop them. Could it have been Spyware Blaster or some such?
Birthdays: cause of memory loss.

I will not dignify that with a reply!!)
Certainement, Madame.

I shall try that for a bit, but paranoia is not my strong suit. I
prefer to surf unemcumbered, so to speak.

Aha. So the real problem is solved. Cool.

Now you want to experiment with using your mail client to directly get
your gmail via POP3. Use the web site only when you're away from home.

Dunno. Do you have any Fx ad blocking extensions installed?

Can't answer that; don't have or need Spyware Blaster.

Heehee. I just had a birthday on Friday and forgot half of what I know.

Yep, but have to mess about a bit now that I have removed a zillion
anti-ad cookie blocks.

Already do that. I just (like you) go in and delete the copy left on
GMail, plus the spam now and again.
Dunno. Do you have any Fx ad blocking extensions installed?

Qu'est que c'est??? But I think I have figured it out......see below.
OH, Firefox blocking extensions.....NO.
Can't answer that; don't have or need Spyware Blaster.

I can. I checked SpywareBlaster and yes, under Firefox, all of the
undesirables were now unchecked, so went thru those and rechecked them.
Obviously there is a connection between that function and Firefox.

Happy birthday, Mr. Leo. Mine was in June and we celebrated it in
Portugal. Along with our anniversary and daughter's birthday. That is
one busy week!!

Mais oui, mon cher. More fun that way. And it scares the heck out of
the *bad guys*, lol.

OK.....reopened Firefox, checked Exceptions and every one of the bad ad
cookies I had checked off in SpywareBlaster are now in Firefox. Not a
bad little free proggie, eh? I had wondered how in heck they got there
in the first place, lol.

Not like me. I do not go to Gmail and delete any copy. There isn't one.
If you POP it directly instead of forwarding it somewhere else, you
download it *off* the gmail server. No maintenance necessary.
Qu'est que c'est??? But I think I have figured it out......see below.

"Fx" is the abbreviation that the Mozilla folks prefer, instead of "FF".

LOL!! OK, getting the coffee pot on. And you don't need a passport
(yet) if crossing our border by land or sea. It's those durned airports
that need them. Bush didn't have his with him this week, but he had
about 100 armed guards with the requisite dark glasses, grin. Too bad.

Unless the deadline gets pushed back again (due to poor service by our
passport issuers), I will need it to get back into the states starting
in 2008. If I'd forget it, you would get to keep me. <g>

I would get to keep you....hmmm. Not entirely sure that would be a good
thing......but OTOH.....if you have a good pension and all of your own
teeth, it is worth thinking about, lol.

As for #2, why on earth would you want to leave the Great White North
and go back to the US of A?? Up here we have free health insurance, TWO
old age pensions, a dollar that is damn near at par with yours, and and
a sensible gun law. (as in NO guns).

Not to forget our national treasure.....maple syrup (yech) Or was that
Celine Dion?? Nah, not to the Quebeckers.

Cheers.....Heather
