Hi There!

I would like to Block a specific "known" Program in Windows XP Home edition
to prevent from executing. Is this possible?

For example, I would like a program named "ApplicationX" from "executing". I
don't want to prevent ApplicationX from installing or un-installing. But I
just want to make ApplicationX un-openable. I hope you get what I mean.

Perhaps using a password, ApplicationX will be allowed to open.

Is this possible? Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Kenny for the reply!

I'm looking for more of using "built-in" feature within WindowsXP or some
Freeware.

Any ideas?

Thanks again,
Don

My car has a "feature" that all cars have, but I don't want anyone to use
it. I don't want to remove it, and I don't want to prevent anyone from
putting it back, I just don't want anyone to use it. Can you help?

Ok, so does this make sense to you? Wouldn't it help to know specifically
what is was that I don't want others to use? I mean, if it's the tire iron,
I could just padlock it, but if it's the AC controls, that proves to be a
bit more difficult to prevent use without removing it.

WinXP has some security controls, but ones to control access to system
software are only available in WinXP Pro (gpedit.msc, secpol.msc). You may
find the security console from MVP DougKnox helpful if you have WinXP Home,
but to control other user accounts you will need the registered version.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane locate the value called DisallowRun. If it exists, double click it and change its value to 1. If it doesn't exist, right click in a blank area of the right pane, select New, DWord value and name it DisallowRun.

Now, highlight the Explorer key and right click it. Select New, Key and name it DisallowRun.

Highlight the key you just created and in the right pane, right click in a blank area and select New, String value. Name the new value 0 (zero) and then double click it. Enter the name of the program (Example: NOTEPAD.EXE) that you wish to restrict.

This must be done on each user account that you wish to restrict the running of this application.

For an easier method of doing this on a per-user basis, see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Windows XP Security Console. The licensed version ($10 for home use) will allow you to restrict applications on a per-user basis.

Here is a freeware solution. With this program you can select to HIDE the
folders of the programs you want to disable, you can even password protect
the hidden folders. With the on/off button you can hide/unhide them.

Hide Files 2.3 (free)
You have any files or programs that you don't want to share with other or
they contain financial and tax information, passwords, personal letters and
emails, private images, and other confidential or personal data. But
typically, computer files and folders have not security protection so the
best way to protect them is to make files or folders invisible for another's
eyes. Hide Files makes hidden any files and folders (or whole Windows folder
or even all computer disks).
