How to be prepared for RAID1 in the future...?

E

Evert

Hi all!

I'll be installing XP on a system here with 1 SATA-drive. The
motherboard (ABIT AB9 Pro) supports various RAID options via ICH8.

Are there any special steps I need to take to be able in the future to
migrate this system to RAID1?

On a Linux box I would simply configure it as RAID1 with 1 'missing'
drive, but I guess it's not that simple with XP.

Isn't it more a function of how the mobo handles the RAID? If the RAID bios
needs to see 2 drives to create a RAID1 set, then you need 2 drives.

True... But what if I add a 2nd drive later, and turn on the RAID in the
BIOS. Can I tell it which drive to use as source, and will it
automagically turn into a working RAID1 setup?

I use RAID0 with my ABIT mobo and I had to pretty much reinstall my OS
after adding the second hard drive in order for the RAID to work. I'm
not sure if RAID1 will allow you to copy from the old disk, I just
never had a need to play around with RAID1. To be safe I'd say just
backup everything you need before you attempt it in case it does fail.

Yeah, RAID0 (striping) is only possible with a re-install... ;-)
But RAID1 (mirror) _should_ be possible without having to reinstall the
whole system, in my opinion... I am just not sure whether that actually
applies to the motherboard in question (Abit AB9 Pro with ICH8R &
JMicron JMB363)

I was under the impression that you should load the Raid drivers
from a floppy disk during OS installation (F6). You don't need them
unless you want to run raid. EG if you want to run regular SATA2,
you only need a slipstreamed install CD. Well, depending on your
operating system.

I thought you could install the F6 raid drivers and not actually
have a raid set up at first, but you'd need them if you wanted to
add raid later.

Right ? Wrong ?

But then I guess I do not need to go for the floppy+F6 method, right?
Then I can just install the OS on 1 drive, and install the driver later
on, the easy way?

Hmm, maybe I should just find a set of HD's and experiment a bit with
this... :-/

With my system, ICH6R and an ITE 2012(IDE) controller Windows XP Pro SP2
will not see any drives at all unless I do the F6 option and install either
or both of the controller drivers. If I want better control over which drive
I want to install XP on (which drive becomes drive C/'0'), I just install
the driver for that particular drive/drives and install the other after
install completes.

Isn't that a matter of a setting in the BIOS? Which MB do you have?
