How to backup and restore recurring outlook calendar events?

There seems to be no way to export recurring events from calendar. You can
export/import a flat csv or excel file of calendar events, but when it comes
to getting dynamic information from Outlook's calendar it's nonexistent.

And what are you doing with this data outside of Outlook?

Does that matter?

I bumped into this a few times, the first was when I wanted to export a
subset of my calendar to an external scheduling tool in CSV format.

The same problem reared it's head when my patience with some unrelated
design flaws in Outlooks' calendar system finally annoyed me enough that
I moved elsewhere.

You're correct. I got around this limitation by synchronizing data to a
PDA, then to my final destination from there.

I actually happen to have Windows Mobile on my Motorola Q. So can I just
install Active Sync on my new computer and sync it from there?

How does Microsoft expect you to properly backup your Outlook if you can
backup your recurring events? That's ludicrous.

It's funny, most of the discussion about this subject is about exporting
recurring events from Outlook to Google's calendar.

Not true - you can use a app called WinCalendar to import your Outlook as a fully editable & formatted calendar in native word DOC or Excel XLS format. From there archiving is simply a matter of saving the one DOC or XLS file. see here for more info:

Yay! That worked. Active Sync on a my new computer imported the recurring
events. How wacky that Microsoft Outlook has to make it pain to backup one's
calendar.

I suspect it's a case of vendor lock-in, and a lack of real concrete CSV
standard for defining recurring items and exceptions since this really
requires iCal/vCal or something similarly more complex then CSV.

However, where there is a will there is a work-around.
