How to back up The active directory?

Nestor

Our company has seven server in the LAN. One of the
server (owl) is the active directory which has the user
list and permissions. It is also a DHCP server and our
DNS server. I would like to create another server that
will work as the active directory in case the owl server
goes down. I would like to create a Backup Domain
Controller (BCD) like in Windows NT 4.0. How do I do
this with Windows 200? Please advise? Thank you in
advance for your cooperation!

Nestor:

Run DCPROMO. It will ask a bunch of questions -- Do you
want to join an existing domain, etc. -- then it will
copy all the data and ask you to reboot.

(If you don't want it to be a DC any more, run DCPROMO
again.)

Bring another Win2K server online and run DCPROMO from the
command line. Prior to DCPROMO make sure the second
server can resolve the first server in DNS. Add it to the
existing domain.

There are no more BDC's in AD rather a multi master
model. Read up on FSMO roles and transfering them in the
event of a failure of the first DC.

You will can also install DNS server on Server #2 as you
did on the first DC and create secondary zones for your
primaries on the first DC. DHCP can be set up in minutes
but you can install ahead of time, authorize it (need EA
account to perform) then leave the scope deactivated.
