How to automatically rename too long filenames in XP

Windows is a mess with long file names.

Mister Bill has shurely developped a program able to
detect all of them on the harddisk, and rename them
atomatically so Xp can read, and rename them.

I have mp3 files on my hard disk that I can do anything
with them except delete them in DOS, it's a big mess.

And you accept no responsibility, what-so-ever, in allowing the file to be
saved as such?

Strange.

How can Microsoft control what _you_ named the files as you saved
them? How much corporate hand-holding do you need?

IE usually saves Favorites with whatever file name the web site sets as the
title field (at least that's my understanding). Somtimes these are very long
and cause problems when backing up to CD. The thumb files created by
explorer also contain encrypted data that causes my CD burner to complain.

I too would like a program that will search, find and offer to convert file
names that might cause a problem.

.

To answer your question Bruce, by properly informing users
about the limit on the length of file names and that to
windows, the entire file path composes the file name
(instead of burying the info in some archaic wording deep
in the help file, KB article, or manual god only knows
where). I learned this the hard way in windows NT and
also lost data this way. Poor OS design and hidden info.

But its has been this way for years.....

Yes, it has been poor OS design for years. And not all
windows users have the experience of dealing with the bad
OS design(s) for years. As a matter of fact, this is
something M$ has prided its OSes on, the ease of use.
Well, I like many others don't consider these types
of "features" and issues in an OS to fall under ease of
use.

Bill Gates Has a severe case of cranial-rectal inversion
(otherwise he would use me). This has been M$'s main
problem all along! Henceforth people stiffed like us.
