How to autoformat repeated phrase?

I want to type a document in which I refer serveral times to the title of a
book. I would like word to recognise each time that I typed it and then put
it in title case and in italics. What's the colsest I can get?

There are other ways, but based on what you describe I'd suggest creating an
AutoText item. You can type & format it once, assign a name to it , then
insert it as often as you wish. See Word Help for more detail & post back if
you need any clarification.
 
I'd use AutoCorrect. When I frequently had to type The Wall Street Journal
(in italics), I had an AutoCorrect entry for wsj that inserted the formatted
text.
