How to add a checkbox that can be checked and unchecked

I want to add a simple checkbox that the user can click with the mouse, which
will show alternatively and checkmark and then blank. Please help. I am
using Word 2007, and I have already added a checkbox with the Developer tab,
design mode, etc, but the box will not allow the mouse click and add the
checkmark. Please advise.

Note that the check boxes you can add via the Developer tab are used
primarily when you want to create a form; the technique suggested in the
above article is more basic.
