You can't. It's encrypted. What are you trying to accomplish?

Please explain what you are trying to accomplish. Why are you trying to copy
the SAM file to another location?

There are hacking tools that access the data in the SAM file, but they do so
by debugging the kernel, not by reading the SAM file directly. This is not
Unix where the password file is clear-text.

Hey! We don't have passwords in clear-text on the Dark Side! But
seriously, the OP needs to tell us what he really wants to do or use his
Mad Search Skilz on Astalavista. ;-)

I'd try using ERUNT, which makes backups of registry hives from within
Windows. Let me see if it catches SAM... yes, it does.

Current version works with SP2 and Vista; in Vista you need to run it
as admin, else it will fail to access the hives as files in the same
way that the original version of ERUNT failed in XP SP2.

ERUNT is free; URL is...
