Hi,
I have two pc's networked (one XP Home one XP Pro).
All ok - can access all from both....except I'm denied access to My
Documents1 from PC2 and denied access to My Documents 2 from PC1....get
message it's not accessible - you may not have permission to use this
network resource...contact the Administrator of the service to find out if
you have access permissions.
How to access My Documents from the networked pc?
Thanks,
John

You have to configure the sharing configuration, click on the 'my documents'
on the computer ur on, or right click, go to sharing and security, uncheck
'Make this folder private' On BOTH computers

That's how Windows XP works when it's installed on an NTFS disk
partition using "simple file sharing". It blocks access to the
Program Files and Windows folders and to individual users' folders
within Documents and Settings.

You can share subfolders within those folders, e.g. you can share
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" or "C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Desktop" and access that folder from another
computer on the network.

On a Windows XP Professional computer, you can disable simple file
sharing, which removes those sharing restrictions:

1. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".

On Windows XP Home Edition, there's no easy solution. The safest
thing is to share individual subfolders, as mentioned above.

You can re-install the operating system on a FAT or FAT32 disk
partition -- those disk formats don't have any sharing restrictions.
However, that would lose the benefits of NTFS, which is more reliable
and efficient and can use larger disks. You'd also need to re-install
all of your applications.

I've heard of two possible solutions for XP Home Edition on an NTFS
disk partition, but:

1. They're un-supported, un-documented, and un-tested by Microsoft.
2. There's no guarantee that they'll work.
3. They might cause data loss or corruption.

I haven't tried them, and I don't know whether they're safe. If you
want to try them, at your own risk:

1. Back up your important data first so that you can restore it in
case of problems.

2. Run System Restore to create a restore point that you can go back
to in case of problems.

Here they are:

1. Start Windows XP in "Safe Mode with Networking" (which temporarily
disables "Simple File Sharing"), share the desired folder(s), set the
permissions, and reboot normally, or:

2. Follow the procedure shown here:

....now at the pulling hair out stage...

Finally, have had success with PC1 - I can now access PC2's My Documents
from PC1...did this from above advice for which thanks.

However have failed to access PC 1's My Documents from PC2!!...the approvals
procedure seems more complicated than with the XP Home pc.

(PC1 is XP pro, PC2 is XP Home if that info is significant)

I'd be glad of any help....when I right click PC1 My Documents then click
Properties, then click Sharing, I have Share this folder ticked and User
Limit Ticked...then when clicking Security am a bit baffled..the top window
entitled Group or user Name I have entered there Administrator
(PC1\Administrator) and in the bottom window entitled Permissions for
Administrator all the boxes except the Special Permissions ticked under
Allow.

I can't see how I arrange to give PC2 the approval to access PC1's My
Documents

I tried clicking on Add Group or User Name and expected to be able to access
PC2 in Locations...but only shows PC1 there :-(

Thanks in anticipation.
