hi i run win xp pro. when ever i go to check defrag, i am told i do not need
to defrag., yet i read in many places that defrag should be run regularly.
is this a problem with the program, and should i just defrag anyway.

thanks tim

I just set it in my scheduler for Defrag to run once a week. I set it up to
do so at a time where I am most likely not at my computer.

Click on "View report" and it will show you which files are fragmented.
When you close that window you'll see a graphical representation of
how much your hard drive is fragmented. I only defrag if I see a lot
of red in the graph.

Start | Run | Paste the following line in the box and click OK...

hh DKconcepts.chm::/defrag_best_practices.htm

Then read: Best practices

I do a LOT of downloading. If I'm not downloading bitmaps
and jpgs, I'm downloading new software and game demos.

Not that I'm advising you to do so, but I installed Norton
2003 System Works JUST for the system / hardware
maintenance. (NOT 2004, NOT 2005, NOT 2006)

That way, the computer tells me when I have to defrag each
drive (I have 4 drives). I have it set up to monitor each
hard drive, and when I see a red light (the signals are set
up like a traffic light. Green is ok; yellow is caution; red
is "problems")

When I see a red light, I defrag.

It doesn't hurt anything.

I'd defrag weekly on GPs.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

If the utility tells you you don't need to, then don't!
Windows XP needs MUCH less defragging than other versions of Windows.

As someone else advised in this thread, XP does not require defragmentation
as much as earlier versions of Windows.
If it says defrag is not necessary don't waste the time doing it. And do not
follow Tallahassee's advice to install an out of date version of Norton's
System Works.
If you want to use a third party defrag application use Perfect Disk
downloadable from the link below.

Bad advice. I have seen 4000 fragmented files and Windows says
defragging isn't needed. Puhlease!

Is there any tiny free tool that can do that same monitoring and
signaling?

Once/month is more than enough. Delete all temp/tmp/cache files in
advance tho for best results.
