How much memory

I'm having a new machine custom built. I will be running
XP pro. 3.2 GHz P4 chip; 865 Intel chipset; 120GB hard
drive. I was thinking of putting in 2GB DDR400 or ECC RAM
but my tech friend says some applications won't be able to
use that much memory and may, in fact, crash because of
it. Is this true? Is 1GB enough for heavy video editing
and manipulating large graphics files in things like corel
photopaint?

1GB should be fine but 2GB would be better. Your tech needs to go back to
school or read up on WinXP memory management system.

Well, I, too have read that excessive memory can adversely affect
performance. So get a few more opinions.

No.

There's no answer to that question. It depends on the size of the
files and what you do. But yes, it's entirely possible that when
doing heavy video or photographic editing, more than 1GB will be
beneficial.

I've heard about this too. That too much memory can
actually hinder your computer's performance and that you
can turn "virtual memory/page file" off if you have too
much RAM.

For those who disagree with your tech friend, they should
provide an explanation why? I am also curious.
