Hi Alto,

That varies from system to system. I have XP on a 7 gig partition with
800 meg free and it runs fine. But I have my data on a different drive
and my programs on yet another drive.

I believe that a user needs at least 10% of the drive free to run
without warnings if they have a small drive. But if you have a 1 TB
drive, you won't need 100 gig free to run "efficiently".

You need at least 15% free space for Disk Defragmenter to run. I feel
comfortable with about 25%. Hard drives are pretty cheap these days; if you
are running out of space, buy another hard drive.

Mark is quite right. In my own case, my personal comfort point is at
about 50%. Software seldom ever shrinks the updates alone will
encroach steadily on your free space. Plus you never know when you'll
find a new application that catches your eye.
