how many times can u do a clean install using home windows xp?

i read there was a limit times u can activate the key to do it on your
own personal computer? is that true?

Not true. On the same computer you can clean install an unlimited amount of
times. Following the ms eula you can't have the same xp on more than one
computer at a time, but formats and clean installs are unlimited.

After you install XP on your system and try to register
your product, it may prompt you that your key has exceeded
the maximum number of times it can be used. Just follow
the instructions and call the MS support center number
given at the Product Key wizard. When u call them just
tell them that you have reinstalled XP on your system and
they will gladly give you a confirmation code to "unlock"
your product.

You can install Windows XP as many times as you need to on the same
hardware. If your hardware changes significantly, and you're told that
activation over the internet did not succeed, you'll be given a phone number
to call. Call this number and explain the situation, and you'll be given an
activation code. The process should take about 5 minutes.

Why don't people make a note of the Activation Code in case they need to
re-install? If the hardware doesn't change, neither will the code, right?

Greetings --

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

If they need to contact Microsoft for the activation code, part of the code
has a data/time stamp embedded, so it's only good for a certain window of
time.

Also, if the PC hardware hasn't changed, there's no good reason why Internet
activation would have failed.

There seems to be a limit on how many times you can "activate" Windows XP
(Home/Pro) by the Internet. However, there is a way of activating XP by
telephone, so YES, there is no limit.

As many as you like on the same (or 'Substantially the same') hardware,
