How many DC's where should they go?

Hi

We are currently runnning in a NT domain that has 10 different sites all
conencted by high bandwidth lines. each site has its own NT BDC. My question
is when we upgrade to AD 2003 should we have a DC at each site or should we
create 2 DC's at each site? Also what FSMO roles should be on each DC at each
site? our main headquartes site is going to have all 5 roles but is it
necceaary that each DC at each site also have all 5? My last question is what
happens at the remote site if the DC at that site goes down, how do users
still log into the network?

Thanks very much

If the DC at a site goes down-- users should still be able to log on, using
the other DCs. It will just take a while.

Hello Skipster,

I recommend you to have the minimum of one domain controller at each site,
there should also be at least one domain controller set as global catalog
server and running dns in each site, the rest depended on how many users you
have on each site, few sites may need more domain controllers than others,
about the FSMO roles it depends on if you planning for a multiple domain
environment or a single root domain,

You will find information about the FSMO roles below:

Thanks very much foryour comments. We are in a multiple domain environment.
Our domain is going to be a subdomain of the parent. i.e
subdomain.domainname1.com We are going to be our own domain but we are part
of the domainname1.com forest

Does this answer your question?

Thanks again

Skip,

There are only five FSMO Roles - two that are Forest-wide and three that are
Domain-wide.

Since you are going to be a sub-domain the only FSMO Roles that would be
available to you would be the three Domain-wide roles. I would say that you
would not be splitting these roles up to much...

Have you read the KB about the FSMO roles, I think it answers your fsmo
question?

You will only have three FSMO roles in a sub-domain. They are PDC
Emulator, RID master and Infrastructure Master. There is only one of
each of these in a Domain. You can only locate these roles at sites if
they are also separate Domains, which is not recommended unless there
are good reasons to adopt this structure. It would be a good idea to
make at least one DC in each site a Global Catalog though.

A lot depends on the detailed structure of your network though.

Cheers,

Cliff
